Holding On and Letting Go

9-25-22Sermon Notes “Letting Go and Holding On”

Not long ago, Pastor Andy played a game with the youth group called, “Taylor Swift or Lamentations.” He would give a phrase, and the youth were supposed to guess whether or not it was from the Book of Lamentations in the Bible, or whether it was a song lyric by Taylor Swift. In order to make it not so obvious (with King James words, etc…) The Message translation is used for the words from the Book of Lamentations. Let’s see how we do.

Taylor Swift, or the Book of Lamentations?

1.I remember it all—oh, how well I remember—the feeling of hitting the bottom.
2.Have you ever seen anything like this? Ever seen pain like my pain, seen what he did to me?
3.It rains when you’re here. And it rains when you’re gone.
4.Long were the nights when my days once revolved around you.
5.Walls of insincerity, shifting eyes, and vacancy vanished when I saw your face.
6.I weep, weep buckets of tears, and not a soul within miles around cares.
7.I gave up on life altogether. I’ve forgotten what the good life is like.
8.Did you have to do this? I was thinking that you could be trusted.
9.Like shadows in a faded light. Oh, we’re invisible.
10.Oh, Oh, Oh…
11.We’ve been to hell and back. We’ve nowhere to turn, nowhere to go. Rivers of tears pour from my eyes.
12.See the vultures circling dark clouds. Love’s a fragile little flame; it could burn out.
13.You’ll find out what it’s like to…get drunk…and wake up with nothing.
14.Time turns flames to embers.
15.These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down.…The time will come for us to finally win. And we’ll sing hallelujah. We’ll sing hallelujah.
[1,2,6,7,11, and 13 are Lamentations. 3,4,5,8,9,12,14,and 15 are Taylor Swift. #10 is both]

This a fun game, but seriously…there are some things that we are just sure are in the Bible, and they actually are not. One example of this is our scripture for this coming Sunday - 1 Tim. 6: 6-19. Does the Bible say, “Money is the root of all evil?” Or was that the O’Jays?

See you Sunday!
Pastor Sam
