What Do These Stones Mean?
In Joshua 4:1-9, you can read the story of the Israelites crossing through the Jordan River in the Promised Land. As they cross the Jordan, God tells them to take twelve stones from the river and build a memorial. This memorial isn’t primarily about remembering the past. It is built for a future conversation: “When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’…” Israel is commanded to remember what God did and not recreate the world in which God did it. The focus is not about "How do we preserve everything these stones represent?" but “What testimony do these stones bear about the God who brought people through the water then—and who is still leading people through the water now?" How are we building a witness that is not about looking back, but a testimony of what God has done and will do?
