She Was Doggone Smart

6-6-21Sermon Notes “She Was Doggone Smart”
If the title of this week’s sermon makes you sit up and take notice…then mission accomplished! (sort of) I’ll be doing a sermon series in the month of June entitled, “Mysterious Women of the Bible.” Each week (except for Fathers’ Day) we will highlight a different woman whose life teaches us a faith lesson. The “mysterious” part is this: I will give you a hint as to the identity of the woman…and you are supposed to guess. Then AFTER you guess – read the passage to see how you did. Everyone who guesses correctly gets a piece of leftover Halloween Candy from the Craft Room at church.
Here is an example: “She had a fruitful discussion with a snake.” Anybody? Of course, I’m talking about Eve. Something to know about these women - none of the women we will talk about this month is perfect. None of them has life handed to them on a silver platter. Nobody has it easy. They all lived in a time when women were overlooked, treated as property, forgotten… They had to overcome GIANT barriers – gender, race and ethnicity, grief, their own failures being among those barriers. I don’t know about you, but I can relate to a person like that!
Something else they all have in common: God used all of them, and is still using them to teach us today, all these centuries later. What will we learn this week? How will God use us?
So, what is your guess for this week’s mysterious woman? “She was doggone smart” is your clue. After you guess, then go and read Matthew 15: 21-28. (And let me know if you win some candy!)
See you Sunday,
Pastor Sam
