She Was the Weak-Eyed Girl

6-27-21Sermon Notes“She Was the Weak-Eyed Girl”
This week’s mysterious woman of the Bible was part of a family in the Old Testament that was famously “dysfunctional.” If you look up the word dysfunctional in dictionary.com, you will find that it means “not performing normally” (as in the case of a bodily organ) or “behaving or acting outside social norms” (as in the case of a family). If you look closely enough at any of our families, you might see something that is not “normal,” or just isn’t the way someone expected it to be. Have you ever had moments when you thought, “This wasn’t what I had in mind?” Have you ever wondered, “Where is God in all this?”
One of my favorite things about our beautiful sanctuary at GFUMC is our stained glass windows. Each of them tells a story from the Bible. But if you walk up and put your face right up to the window and stare at it closely, you will just see a piece of colorful glass. Move even closer, and you will see the gritty details and jagged angles. Nothing to write home about… Step back, though, and take in the entire window. See how all the pieces – all the various colors – come together as if a master artist had a grand design in mind all along. The big picture is what tells the story.
Look at this mysterious woman of the Bible up close…look at her dysfunctional family, and see the gritty details. Up close, all we see are flaws and jagged edges. She is not the girl of anyone’s dreams. She is nobody’s first choice. However…she is God’s choice to move forward God’s redemptive purpose. Backing up and seeing the big picture, this weak-eyed girl starts to look…well…beautiful! Have you guessed who she is yet? Take a guess, then read Genesis 29: 15-28.
I hope you will join us this Sunday in-person or by livestream!
