John 15:12-15 New International Version (NIV)12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

Today's scripture passage is one that we have heard hundreds of times. With familiar passages it's easy to skim over them without letting the deep meaning sink in. Jesus calls us his friends in this passage. That's a big deal that the savior of the word calls us friends, and Jesus is making the things of the Father known to us! We are also left with a great command. We are told to love each other as much as Jesus loved us! Think about how divided people are these days. It's easy to be ugly to our neighbors, fellow church members, family, and co-workers, but remember we are called to love just as much as we are loved by the savior. That's a lot of love and grace we are supposed to extend. Today we are challenged to go love others in a big way, even love those who are difficult to love.
