3D Devotional 8.5.2019
Monday, August 5, 2019 - Man on the Moon John 15:5
My good friend, Harry Vance, sent me an email at the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing – July 20, 1969. I want to use it as today’s 3D devotional. I certainly remember watching the moon landing with my family. At the time, my dad was teaching at Birmingham Southern Below are a few fun facts to share with about the Apollo Moon exploration that you may find interesting:
1. Only four men are alive today that have walked on the moon.
2. NASA’s Apollo program ran 17 missions.
3. Humanity has not set foot on the moon since Apollo 17 mission in December 1972.
Harry’s email was about a 1970 article published from Guidepost. I had never read or heard about it but it said the first solid food and liquid ingested on the moon surface was part of a Holy Communion. It was served by Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon. Aldrin also read the words of Jesus Christ from John 15:5: "I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, for you can do nothing without me."
Source: Guide Post: Aldrin was an elder at his Presbyterian Church in Texas during this period in his life; and, knowing that he would soon be doing something unprecedented in human history, he felt that he should mark the occasion somehow. He asked his minister to help him and so the minister consecrated a communion wafer and a small vial of communion wine.
Buzz Aldrin took them with him out of the Earth's orbit and onto the surface of the moon. He and Armstrong had only been on the lunar surface for a few minutes when Aldrin made the following public statement: “This is the LM (Lunar Module) pilot. I'd like to take this opportunity to ask every person listening in, whoever and wherever they may be, to pause for a moment and contemplate the events of the past few hours and to give thanks in his or her own way.”
Buzz then ended radio communication, and there, on the silent surface of the moon, 250,000 miles from home, he read a verse from the Gospel of John, and he took communion.
Think about it this way: I think it is appropriate that the first words spoken on the moon were the words of Jesus Christ, who made the Earth and the moon. Thank you for sharing this Harry. Thank you Buzz Aldrin for your faith. We also thank you God for being our Creator – including all the plants and stars in the universe.
