Luke 9:11-17 New King James Version (NKJV)Then He said to His disciples, "Make them sit down in groups of fifty."15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17 So they all ate and were [a]filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.

The feeding of the five thousand, recorded in Matthew 14:13-21, is probably the most familiar of all of Jesus' miracles. It is the only miracle recorded in all four gospels (see Mark 6:30-44;Luke 9:10-19; John 6:1-14). The day is long. There are thousands of people and to the disciples it must have seemed logical to ask Jesus to send the people away to find shelter and food for themselves. And then Jesus says to the disciples, "You give them something to eat."
Some would say that this food was symbolic of the "heavenly bread" that Jesus offers. "Then Jesus declared, 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."' John 6:35 New International Version (NIV)
Others would say that the feeding of the five thousand points to God's generosity and provision and is reminiscent of the manna from heaven that God provided to the Israelites. God give generously and abundantly.
But also notice, Jesus said, "YOU give them something to eat." Jesus called on the disciples to take action and help to provide food for the great multitude that was gathered. How are you called on today to bless someone? How are you called on to help feed those who are hungry? How are you called to share "the bread of heaven" with someone who does not know Jesus?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, guide me as I seek to follow you and answer your call that I may be a blessing to others. Amen
