Monday, September 2, 2019 Be Bold Luke 10:30-35
Our theme for our Generosity Campaign is Be Bold! I think it is perfect. The bible is filled with stories of boldness. One of my favorite is the well-known story of the Good Samaritan. This guy did what he had to do at the moment!
Luke 10:30-35 New Living Translation (NLT) – “ 30 Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. 31 “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. 32 A Temple assistant[a] walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.”
3D Scripture Interpretation:
As you read this scripture, did you count the times the Good Samaritan was bold?
He didn’t pretend he was superior by talking down to him. Instead, the Good Samaritan went directly to the victim. He didn’t avoid eye contact and keep walking. He went into action.
The Good Samaritan used what he had. He dressed the man’s wounds with wine and oil. Why? That’s what he had on his donkey. The wine worked okay because it’s alcohol. It’s an antiseptic. The oil worked okay because it would be soothing to the man’s wounds.
Where did the Good Samaritan get the bandages? He wasn’t a doctor. He didn’t have a first aid kit. And the hurt man had been stripped naked, so he didn’t have any clothes. The bandages were from the Samaritan’s own clothes.
Being bold can be risky business. Not only did Good Samaritan took the injured man to the nearest hotel and buy him a room, he also told the innkeeper he would be responsible for the bill.
Think about this: The world is full of injured people. They all may not be wounded physically like the Jewish man in today’s story. Maybe they are hurt emotionally, spiritually, or even financially. Like the Good Samaritan, we need to be bold and act immediately! They need our love and kindness. Don’t wait for a more convenient time to help someone. Be bold – seize the moment!
